Ann was born and raised in Minnesota, where she learned to water ski and hunt pheasant. She attended Xavier University in Cincinnati Ohio before joining the Virology Graduate Program at Harvard Medical School.  In addition to her dissertation work on innate immune signaling, she is active in Science in the News and also plays trumpet in the Dudley House Jazz Band.
